Partnerships between DHL Express and BPI in the Philippines, Cummins’ focus on immediate steps for decarbonising the mining industry, and Ireland’s diversified energy strategy highlight the importance of collaborative efforts in driving sustainability across different sectors.
DHL Express and BPI Partner to Reduce GHG Emissions Substantially
Manila, Philippines, June 27, 2024: DHL Express has signed an agreement with the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) to reduce the bank’s annual greenhouse gas emissions from shipping documents by 90% through DHL Express’ GoGreen Plus service. Launched in 2023, this service focuses on the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), derived from sustainable feedstocks like used cooking oil and food waste, and supports DHL Group’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
Both BPI Chief Finance Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer Eric Luchangco and DHL Express Philippines Country Manager Nigel Lockett expressed optimism that this collaboration would set new sustainability standards in the banking and logistics sectors.
Cummins Explores Immediate Steps for Mining Industry Decarbonisation
At The Electric Mine 2024, Cummins Mining Market Sensing & Innovation Manager John Essegbey highlighted various pathways for miners to meet sustainability goals, focusing on immediate, practical actions rather than solely on longer-term electrification methods. He emphasized upgrading existing equipment with the latest technology, which can significantly reduce emissions and operational costs. This approach led to a reported 7% fuel economy improvement and a 45,900-ton CO2e reduction for a mining customer, illustrating substantial environmental and financial benefits.
Ireland’s Climate Strategy Requires Multi-Faceted Energy Solutions
A recent discussion on Ireland’s Climate Action Plan 2024 emphasizes that reliance on electric vehicles (EVs) alone might not suffice to meet emission reduction targets. Experts suggest incorporating low-carbon liquid fuels (LCLF) like Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) alongside EV adoption. LCLFs have already demonstrated significant carbon emission reductions, suggesting that a blended strategy using multiple sustainable energy sources could more effectively achieve the country’s climate goals by 2030. The government is encouraged to implement policies supporting this diversified approach.
