Donald Trump posts $92 million bond in E. Jean Carroll defamation lawsuit appeal

Former US President Donald Trump has posted a $92 million bond in the defamation lawsuit filed by writer E. Jean Carroll as he appeals the jury’s $83.3 million damages award, amidst facing multiple legal challenges.

Former US President Donald Trump has posted a $92 million (£71 million) bond in a defamation lawsuit filed by writer E. Jean Carroll. This move comes as Trump appeals the jury’s decision to award Carroll $83.3 million in damages. The bond, obtained from the Federal Insurance Company, a Chubb unit, is in response to a New York judge’s ruling refusing to delay the deadline for its submission. This ensures Carroll can collect the judgment amount if the appeal confirms the initial verdict.

The defamation case originated from Carroll’s allegations that Trump raped her in the mid-1990s, an accusation Trump has vehemently denied, stating he did not know her and the incident never happened. While the jury rejected Carroll’s rape claims, they found Trump had defamed her through statements made in 2019 while he was still president.

In addition to the defamation lawsuit, Trump faces financial pressures from multiple legal challenges, including a $454 million civil fraud penalty related to another case. Carroll was awarded $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages. The legal proceedings are part of the broader financial and legal struggles confronting Trump, who is also preparing for his first criminal trial involving allegations of hush-money payments.
