Donald Trump required to post bond after defamation verdict denial

A federal judge in Manhattan has refused Donald Trump’s request to delay an $83.3 million defamation verdict, demanding he post a bond amidst financial and legal challenges.

A federal judge in Manhattan has denied former President Donald Trump’s request to delay an $83.3 million defamation verdict against him, related to a case brought by writer E. Jean Carroll. The decision compels Trump to post a bond while he prepares for an expected appeal. This follows a jury’s finding that Trump defamed Carroll by denying her allegations that he raped her.

Judge Lewis A. Kaplan dismissed Trump’s appeal for a delay, attributing his financial predicaments to his reluctance to act promptly. Carroll’s legal representation has portrayed Trump as an unreliable debtor, emphasizing his obscured financial state. This comes after a separate ruling last month ordering Trump to pay $454.2 million in a different case.

The defamation suit originated from Trump’s public refutation of Carroll’s rape accusations, which she claimed occurred in the mid-1990s. The jury initially awarded Carroll $5 million in damages in May. Trump’s legal team has been criticized for seeking to postpone the bond posting deadline belatedly, as the judgment is set to be finalized soon. Moreover, Trump has been penalized an additional $355 million in a separate case for overstating his wealth in financial documents.

These legal tribulations augment the financial challenges facing Trump, who has encountered numerous recent court defeats concerning his business operations. Nevertheless, Trump maintains confidence in his financial resilience, affirming his wealth’s adequacy to fulfill his obligations despite the array of legal setbacks and the accumulation of financial penalties.
