Fast-growing wildfires threaten Ruidoso as 5,000 residents evacuate in southern New Mexico

Two wildfires are rapidly spreading across the Mescalero Apache tribal reservation towards Ruidoso, prompting evacuation orders for 5,000 residents. Emergency protocols are initiated in nearby Roswell as responders tackle challenges amidst severe drought conditions.

Two fast-growing wildfires are sweeping across the Mescalero Apache tribal reservation in southern New Mexico, converging on the village of Ruidoso. As of June 17, approximately 5,000 residents have been ordered to evacuate due to the imminent threat. The South Fork Fire, which ignited on Monday morning, rapidly expanded to at least 3,000 acres by nightfall. A second fire, the Salt Fire, is burning nearby and has already consumed 2,000 acres.

Evacuation orders are in effect for several areas on the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation, including Snow Springs, Fence Canyon, Whitetail, Chihuahua Well, Fantasy Lane, Summit area, and Botella Road. Highways 48 and 70 at Apache Summit are closed, leaving Sudderth to Highway 70 and out to Roswell as the sole evacuation route.

Roswell, located about 70 miles east of Ruidoso, has initiated emergency protocols, clearing hospital space and setting up shelters for evacuees and their animals. Power has been shut off in parts of Ruidoso, impacting nearly 800 homes and businesses, to assist first responders. The village, home to around 8,000 permanent residents and numerous vacation homes, is experiencing severe drought conditions, contributing to the rapid fire spread.

Responders are facing challenges, including phone outages hindering 911 services. Firefighters, including the elite Smokey Bear Hot Shots, have been deployed alongside air attack units to combat the fires.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has assured that state, tribal, and federal resources are being rapidly deployed for protection and urged residents to remain calm and adhere to evacuation orders.
