Historic storm causes severe flooding at Dubai International Airport

An unprecedented thunderstorm in Dubai has led to significant flooding at one of the world’s busiest airports, causing major disruptions in flights and affecting thousands of travellers.
Severe flooding occurred at Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates following a historic thunderstorm that deposited over a year and a half’s worth of rain in a single day. This extreme weather event, described by the state-run WAM news agency as the most significant since records began in 1949, led to significant disruptions at one of the world’s busiest airports.
The heavy rainfall, which took place recently, resulted in extensive floodwater accumulation on taxiways and impeded access to airport terminals, thus affecting flight operations. Emirates airline had to suspend check-in services for departing passengers, advising those affected to contact booking agents for rearranging their travel plans. Both arrivals and departures experienced delays.
Dubai International Airport responded by advising travellers to check the latest flight information directly with their airlines and to avoid visiting the airport unless absolutely necessary.
Despite these disruptions, the UK Foreign Office has not modified its travel advice for the UAE. The region is considered safe, though the terror threat level remains high. Travellers to the UAE are reminded to ensure they have comprehensive travel insurance.
