A Spanish aid ship loaded with 200 tonnes of food aid is on standby in Cyprus, awaiting Israeli approval to set sail for Gaza. This comes as part of an international initiative aimed at delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza’s 2.3 million residents amidst fears of famine. The vessel, operated by the search and rescue group Open Arms, is part of a broader effort involving the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, Cyprus, and the United Arab Emirates to establish a new maritime aid corridor to the war-stricken territory.
This humanitarian mission has gained urgency following a deadly incident dubbed the “Flour Massacre,” where over 100 Palestinians were killed while attempting to secure essential supplies. Amidst the crisis, criticism has been directed at U.S. President Joe Biden for what some see as inadequate measures to address the humanitarian situation.
