International Women’s Day protests in Scotland spotlight Gaza conflict

On International Women’s Day, demonstrators across Scotland rallied in support of Palestinian women amidst the Gaza conflict, demanding a ceasefire and critiquing the UK Government’s stance.

On International Women’s Day, demonstrators in Scotland, organized by the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, took to the streets of Edinburgh and Glasgow to voice support for Palestinian women in Gaza and called for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The protests, which underscored the impact of the conflict on women, saw participants carrying signs with messages such as “Gaza is a war on women” and “Israel kills two mothers every hour.” These demonstrations are part of a series of protests that began on October 7, criticizing Israel’s actions towards civilians in Gaza.

In a conspicuous protest, activists from This Is Rigged targeted the UK Government’s office in Edinburgh to express their dissatisfaction with the British government’s stance towards the Gaza conflict. Despite the demands for a ceasefire, the UK Government has not acceded to these calls, leading to discontent among protesters and activist groups. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s call for the public to reject extremist messages was met with criticism from Ben Jamal, the director of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, who urged for self-reflection.

The situation in Gaza has also led to personal pleas, such as from Gili Roman, whose sister was recently freed from captivity in Gaza. Roman emphasized the importance of returning all 134 remaining hostages, including his sister-in-law, to their families, amidst negotiations for another ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. While expressing relief at his sister’s release, Roman highlighted the ongoing concern for the well-being of other family members still in captivity and the broader devastation attributed to the actions of Hamas.

These events underscore a complex landscape of protest, political rhetoric, and personal stories intertwined with the broader conflict in Gaza, alongside the UK’s stance and public demonstrations against it.
