John Swinney elected as Scotland’s next First Minister

John Swinney has been chosen as Scotland’s First Minister in a decisive vote at Holyrood, succeeding Humza Yousaf amid political partnership breakdowns, with promises to tackle key challenges like education and healthcare.

John Swinney has been elected as Scotland’s next First Minister, receiving 64 votes at a session of Holyrood. His nearest competitor, Douglas Ross of the Scottish Conservatives, garnered 31 votes. Anas Sarwar of the Scottish Labour Party received 22 votes, and Alex Cole-Hamilton of the Scottish Liberal Democrats obtained four votes. The seven MSPs from the Scottish Green Party abstained.

The election followed the resignation of Humza Yousaf, who stepped down after a no-confidence vote triggered by the dissolution of a powersharing agreement with the Scottish Greens. Swinney, a member of the Scottish National Party, highlighted the importance of addressing significant issues including education, healthcare, and the economy, and expressed a desire to collaborate across party lines.

In his acceptance speech, Swinney specifically acknowledged the personal challenges faced due to his wife Elizabeth’s battle with multiple sclerosis, noting the impact on their family life and his responsibilities.

The Scottish Secretary, Alister Jack, congratulated Swinney, urging a focus on improving public services and economic growth for the benefit of all Scotland. Swinney has pledged to dedicate himself fully to his new role while maintaining support for his family.
