Colombia cuts diplomatic ties with Israel, citing actions in Gaza

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has terminated diplomatic relations with Israel, labeling their military actions in Gaza as genocide. This decision could significantly affect military and economic relations between the two nations.

Colombia has severed diplomatic relations with Israel, a decision announced by President Gustavo Petro, who criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocide.” This diplomatic split calls into question the future of military and economic interactions between the two nations. Historically, Colombia has been dependent on Israeli military equipment and maintenance, specifically its fleet of over 20 Kfir fighter jets which play a crucial role in its defense strategies. Moreover, the two countries have a free trade agreement initiated in 2020, affecting bilateral trade including exports such as coal, coffee, and flowers.

In other developments, the Society of Authors (SoA) in the UK faced internal conflict during an extraordinary general meeting. Members voted against a motion to condemn Israel’s military actions in Gaza while approving another related to divestment from the fossil fuels industry. The decision has sparked debate within the literary community about the role of writers’ organizations in political issues.

Also, the Israeli Defense Forces conducted a raid near Tulkarm in the West Bank, resulting in the deaths of five Palestinians. Four of those killed were confirmed as members of Hamas. The operation, described by the IDF as a counter-terrorism mission, came amidst escalating tensions in the region.

Meanwhile, in an international diplomatic effort, U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan stated that the U.S. would not agree to a defense pact with Saudi Arabia unless the kingdom normalizes relations with Israel. This statement is part of broader negotiations aimed at stabilizing the Middle East by fostering agreements that include significant steps toward peace and the establishment of a Palestinian state.

These series of events illustrate the complexities and interconnected nature of diplomatic, military, and trade relations on a global scale, impacting a wide range of geopolitical and social issues.
