London on flood alert and UK braces for snowstorm as wild weather prevails
Central London prepares for potential flooding due to high tides along the River Thames, as the UK anticipates a significant snowstorm affecting Scotland, northern England, and other areas at the start of March.
Central London is on alert for potential flooding along the River Thames due to high spring tides, impacting areas from the Thames Barrier to west London, including popular spots like the Mayflower and Angel pubs and the bankside near the Tate Modern. The Environment Agency advised that while properties are not expected to be affected, low-lying roads and footpaths might flood. This comes amidst a yellow rain warning for London and the South East, following recent heavy rains and last month’s significant flooding in Hackney Wick from the River Lea overflow. Residents in vulnerable locations are advised to remain cautious and prepared for possible disruptions.
Simultaneously, the UK braces for a substantial snowstorm expected at the start of March, with forecasts predicting a 340-mile long system to bring significant snowfall and bitter temperatures across Scotland, northern England, and areas such as Newcastle, the Yorkshire Dales, and the Lake District. This wintry weather, coinciding with the onset of spring on March 1, is anticipated to give way to rainier conditions and a gradual return to near-average temperatures through the first two weeks of March, with a mix of showers and sunny spells predicted.
