Londoners can now donate non-Ulez compliant vehicles to Ukraine, announces Mayor Sadiq Khan

Sadiq Khan introduces a scheme allowing Londoners to donate vehicles not meeting the ultra low emission zone standards to Ukraine, offering £2,000 grants for donors. This move comes after discussions with Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko and aims to support Ukraine’s humanitarian needs.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has introduced a new initiative allowing Londoners to donate vehicles that do not comply with the ultra low emission zone (Ulez) standards to Ukraine, instead of opting for scrappage. This announcement followed discussions with Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, and with the support of British-Ukrainian Aid and the Ukrainian embassy, overturning Khan’s initial stance against modifying the Ulez scheme for vehicle exports. The scheme, starting next week, offers up to £2,000 in grants for those who donate their vehicles, aimed at assisting Ukraine’s humanitarian and medical needs amidst its ongoing conflict.

In a parallel effort, the London Ambulance Service will contribute 50 decommissioned ambulances to the cause. This initiative aligns with London’s broader environmental efforts under Mayor Khan’s administration, specifically the expansion of the Ulez to cover all London boroughs, an action credited with significantly reducing roadside pollution. A joint report by the Greater London Authority and Transport for London highlighted that between 2016 and 2023, London saw a 49% drop in NO2 pollutants. This achievement is particularly noteworthy against the backdrop of the city’s growing population, which increased by over a million during the same period.

The Ulez’s implementation, alongside the introduction of electric buses and the promotion of cleaner private vehicles, has played a crucial role in London’s environmental progress. However, the recent opening of the Silvertown road tunnel has sparked debate, with some expressing concerns over potential adverse effects on pollution in already impacted areas. Despite these challenges, the collective efforts reflect a commitment to improving air quality in London while also providing support to Ukraine amidst its crisis.
