Eva Tennent, a 10-year-old girl suffering from Rett syndrome, has been left with an inoperable condition after her spinal surgery was cancelled seven times over six months at Edinburgh’s Sick Kids Hospital. The cancellations, which are attributed to staff shortages and Eva’s deteriorating respiratory health, have left her mother, Jill Lockhart, in despair as the curvature of Eva’s spine worsened from 60.89 to 110 degrees during this period.
The delay in surgery, initially intended to address Eva’s advanced scoliosis, has escalated to a critical stage where her survival chances are uncertain. This unfortunate situation has cast a spotlight on the broader issues within the NHS, including nursing shortages and the suspension of one of Scotland’s three paediatric spinal surgeons, which have contributed to delays in essential treatments for vulnerable patients.
The family’s ordeal underscores the impact of healthcare delays and the essential need for improved systems within the NHS to prevent similar cases.
