Norway’s King Harald V has safely returned to Norway after undergoing a medical procedure in Malaysia to fit a pacemaker following a low heart rate incident. The 87-year-old monarch was on a private vacation in Langkawi with Queen Sonja when he was hospitalized due to an infection. After receiving the temporary pacemaker at Sultanah Maliha Hospital, he was flown back to his home country for further recovery. This event took place just days after celebrating his 87th birthday in Malaysia.

The king is set to take a two-week sick leave, during which Crown Prince Haakon will cover his royal duties. The Royal Palace has communicated that the procedure went well and was a precautionary measure to address his declining heart rate. King Harald, who has been Norway’s ceremonial head of state since 1991, has experienced several health issues in recent years. Despite this, he has shown resilience and intention to continue his reign, with no plans for abdication.

King Harald’s return and the successful implantation of a pacemaker signify his ongoing commitment to his role in national leadership, despite personal health challenges. As Norway’s oldest reigning monarch, his health remains a significant concern for the country, illustrating his integral role in the nation’s leadership and continuity.
