An investigation is underway after a Batik Air flight from South East Sulawesi to Jakarta strayed off course when both pilots fell asleep, raising significant concerns over aircrew fatigue and flight safety regulations.
Indonesia’s Batik Air is currently under investigation after an incident where both pilots, aged 32 and 28, fell asleep at the controls during a flight from South East Sulawesi to Jakarta on 25 January. This unusual event led to the aircraft straying off its intended course for approximately 28 minutes while carrying 153 passengers. The situation was resolved when one of the pilots awoke and corrected the flight path, ensuring a safe landing for everyone on board. It has been reported that both pilots were dealing with personal circumstances leading to fatigue; the older pilot was caring for his newborn twins, and the co-pilot was adjusting to a recent move.
This incident has raised serious concerns regarding air crew fatigue and its potential impact on flight safety. It prompted immediate responses from aviation authorities, including a strong reprimand from Kristi Endah Murni of the Indonesian transport ministry, emphasizing the need for airlines to enforce rest policies effectively. Batik Air has faced scrutiny before, with a notable event in 2019 involving an emergency landing after a pilot fainted. Despite these incidents, the airline has reassured the public of its commitment to implementing and adhering to safety measures.
Alvin Lie, an aviation expert, highlighted the necessity of ensuring pilots receive adequate rest, particularly in light of the National Transportation Safety Committee’s findings. Both pilots involved in the recent event have been temporarily suspended as investigations by Indonesian aviation officials continue, focusing on reinforcing passenger safety and preventing similar incidents in the future.
