Teenager sentenced to life for the murder of elderly Leicester man

Daniel Rounce, 18, receives a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years for the premeditated murder of 79-year-old Gerald Wickes in Leicester, highlighting issues of youth crime and elder safety.

Daniel Rounce, an 18-year-old, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years for the murder of 79-year-old Gerald Wickes in Leicester. The sentencing took place after Rounce was found guilty of stabbing Wickes through the heart in a premeditated attack. The incident occurred while Mr. Wickes was visiting family at a residence.

The court, presided over by Judge Timothy Spencer KC, described the murder as “merciless” and highlighted Rounce’s deliberate targeting of an elderly victim in his own environment, ruling it a “truly wicked” act. Throughout the trial, evidence of Rounce’s premeditation was shown, including CCTV footage of him scoping the area before the murder.

Detaining Rounce proved challenging due to his history of disruptive and manipulative behavior, both during and preceding the trial. Despite Rounce’s claim that he acted in panic during an attempted robbery, the judge dismissed this explanation. It was disclosed that Rounce had previously tried to feign mental illness to evade trial but was ultimately deemed fit for trial following a trial of facts.

The murder has left Mr. Wickes’ family and the community deeply afflicted. Mr. Wickes was remembered by his family and friends in court as a kind and generous person, often helping others in need. His son, Garry Wickes, described him as “one of life’s helpers,” whose memory will endure in the hearts of many.

Leicestershire Police, represented by Detective Inspector David Greenhalgh, commented on the devastating impact of the crime on the victim’s family and the local community, while also indicating Rounce’s presence near the crime scene prior to the attack. His arrest followed a thorough investigation and search in the area.
