Queensland Premier rules out new Olympic stadium, opts for upgrades

In a significant move, Queensland Premier Steven Miles has decided against the construction of a new Olympic stadium for the Brisbane 2032 Games, opting instead to upgrade existing facilities to ensure cost-effectiveness and accessibility.

The Queensland Premier, Steven Miles, has decided against the construction of a new multibillion-dollar Olympic stadium in Brisbane for the 2032 Games. Initially, there was a proposal for a $2.7 billion rebuild of the Gabba cricket ground, followed by a suggestion to construct a new $3.4 billion stadium in Victoria Park. However, these proposals were set aside due to concerns over high costs and the feasibility of such large-scale projects.

Instead, the Premier has chosen to focus on upgrading existing facilities, with plans to utilize Suncorp Stadium and the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSAC) for the Olympics’ major events, including the opening and closing ceremonies as well as athletics competitions. This decision reflects an emphasis on cost-effectiveness and accessibility, addressing the public’s concerns over the estimated $7 billion expense for the Olympics infrastructure.

The shift in strategy from constructing new venues to refurbishing existing ones is estimated to cost around A$1 billion, a figure substantially lower than the initial proposals. This move has been influenced by a review conducted by former Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, which leaned towards pragmatic and financially responsible solutions for hosting the Olympics. As Brisbane prepares for the 2032 Games, the focus remains on delivering a world-class event while adhering to budget constraints and enhancing the existing sporting infrastructure.
