Over 200,000 people gather in London for pro-Palestine rally on Palestinian Land Day

Demonstrators in London, including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and actor Khalid Abdalla, demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and call for an end to UK arms deals with Israel.

Over 200,000 individuals convened in London on the anniversary of Palestinian Land Day to participate in a pro-Palestine demonstration, advocating for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza amidst the ongoing conflict. The rally, organised by groups including the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and Stop the War, drew attention with high-profile speeches from former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, actor Khalid Abdalla, and others.

Jeremy Corbyn criticised the UK’s arms dealings with Israel, while Khalid Abdalla and Diane Abbott, along with other politicians, emphasised the importance of action over rhetoric in support of a ceasefire and in addressing the conflict. The protest, which also saw a significant turnout in Russell Square, aimed to spotlight global leaders’ role in the conflict, specifically calling for a halt to arms supplies to Israel and a resumption of funding to the UN Relief Agency for Palestinians.

The Metropolitan Police, who had anticipated the demonstration, executed a comprehensive policing plan that covered this and other weekend events, ensuring public safety. Despite the peaceful intentions, four arrests were made, including one on suspicion of a terror-related offence.

This mass gathering in London coincides with escalating tensions and protests within Israel and Tel Aviv as truce talks between Israel and Hamas are expected to resume in Cairo. The demonstration underscored the widespread call for peace in the region, reflecting the broader international concern and support for Palestine.
