Russia introduces controversial military-focused textbook amid scrutiny of the Russian Red Cross

A new Russian textbook aimed at high school students promotes military service and revises the historical narrative of the war in Ukraine, amidst separate concerns over the Russian Red Cross’s alleged involvement in military operations and Pope Francis’s contentious remarks on the conflict.

A new Russian school textbook titled “The Russian Army in Defence of the Fatherland” has been introduced, targeted at high school students aged 15 to 18 in Russia and occupied Ukrainian territories. Set to feature in lessons starting from September, the book has been critiqued for promoting military service and altering historical narratives concerning the war in Ukraine. It lauds Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and the annexation of Crimea in 2014 while blaming Ukraine and NATO for the invasion of Ukraine, according to Ukrainian political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko. The textbook also lists military benefits and contains enlistment links, prompting fears of increased military recruitment from vulnerable groups.

In a separate development, the Russian Red Cross (RRC) is under review for purported connections to Kremlin’s war efforts and propaganda in Ukraine. Leaked documents suggest the organization’s involvement in military-related activities and plans to extend operations into occupied Ukrainian territories, contravening international law. The International Federation of the Red Cross is examining these allegations, with potential disciplinary actions such as suspension or expulsion hanging in the balance. Governments, including the UK and Sweden, are closely watching the situation.

Additionally, Pope Francis has stirred controversy by implying Ukraine might have to consider surrendering to Russia. This has drawn sharp criticism from Ukrainian officials and raised concerns over the Vatican’s stance on the conflict. Critics argue that the Pope’s remarks could unintentionally endorse ongoing conflict and overlook the necessity of defending Ukraine against Russian aggression. The Pope’s suggestion has intensified the debate around international diplomacy and the complexities involved in navigating ongoing geopolitical tensions.
