Samsung Electronics Union Declares First-Ever Strike in South Korea
On June 7, 2024, the Nationwide Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU) will lead a one-day strike at Samsung Electronics, marking the first strike in the company’s history. This action follows unsuccessful negotiations over wages and bonuses. The union represents 28,000 workers, nearly a quarter of Samsung’s workforce in South Korea.
Union president Son Woomok and other representatives stated during a live press conference on May 29 that they demand transparent performance bonuses and fair wage increases. The union emphasized the need for proper negotiations, accusing the company of neglecting labor concerns.
A Samsung Electronics spokesperson reaffirmed the company’s commitment to good faith negotiations. However, tensions remain as the company faces challenges, including a past chip shortage during the COVID pandemic and a recent dip in smartphone sales.
The strike poses potential disruptions to the global semiconductor supply chain, given Samsung’s significant role in producing memory chips and high-end AI hardware.
