Oatzempic: TikTok’s latest weight loss trend under scrutiny

A homemade oat-based drink inspired by celebrities has sparked a new weight management craze on TikTok, but experts urge caution.
A new trend, dubbed Oatzempic, has emerged on TikTok, inspired by celebrities like Amy Schumer and Rebel Wilson’s promotion of the weight management drug Ozempic. The trend involves a homemade oat-based drink purported to aid in weight loss, consisting of rolled oats, water, lime juice, and cinnamon. Participants of the “30-day Oatzempic Challenge” consume this mixture daily for a month to evaluate its effect on weight reduction.
The trend draws a parallel between the function of the prescription medication Ozempic, used for managing diabetes and weight, and the natural properties of oats. Oats are known for their high fiber content, which can lower blood sugar levels and promote a feeling of satiety, potentially contributing to weight management.
Despite the growing popularity of Oatzempic, New York City-based dietician Natalie Rizzo advises caution, warning against relying solely on the drink for weight loss. Rizzo points out that sudden and drastic calorie reduction can lead to overeating, undermining weight loss efforts. She advocates for sustainable weight management through gradual lifestyle changes rather than quick fixes. Rizzo also recommends consuming oats in their whole form, such as in a bowl of oatmeal, to maximize their health benefits, noting there is no definitive evidence linking the Oatzempic drink directly to weight loss.
