Investigation launched into unverified autism treatment claims in Greenwich

The Metropolitan Police and Greenwich Council are probing allegations of unproven and potentially dangerous stem cell treatments being marketed as a cure for autism, following a fake doctor scam alert in the area.

The Metropolitan Police, in coordination with the Royal Borough of Greenwich, are investigating a series of claims regarding risky and unproven stem cell injections being offered as a cure for autism. This governmental response was sparked by a warning issued by Greenwich Council about an individual falsely posing as a doctor, intending to perform dangerous procedures involving the transfer of bone marrow and spinal fluid into the brain.

The police began their investigation following alerts from both Greenwich and Newham Councils about the so-called treatments, which have no basis in scientific evidence and carry significant health risks. Experts like Professor Declan Murphy from King’s College London and organizations such as the National Autistic Society have criticized these claims, emphasizing that autism cannot be cured and advising against the pursuit of such experimental treatments.

The investigation is focused on identifying and locating the individuals behind these offers. The councils have alerted schools and nurseries and urged families to report any suspicious approaches. As of now, there have been no arrests, and it appears that no one in the UK has undergone the treatment. The National Autistic Society advocates seeking information and support from established, reputable sources like themselves or the NHS.
