U.S. sees a modest rise in illegal border crossings in February

Illegal border crossings into the U.S. from Mexico increased slightly in February, amid ongoing political debate and policy measures aimed at managing immigration.

In February, illegal border crossings into the U.S. from Mexico saw a slight increase but remained among the lowest since President Joe Biden assumed office, according to Customs and Border Protection. The agency reported 140,644 arrests, a metric indicating the ongoing concern among voters regarding immigration. This issue has been a focal point of Republican criticism, particularly from former President Donald Trump, who claims Biden’s policies have increased migration and reduced border control.

In contrast, the Biden administration cites global factors as significant contributors to the migration surge. Enhanced enforcement efforts by the Mexican government, alongside seasonal migration patterns and specific U.S. enforcement measures, are believed to play roles in the observed fluctuations in border crossings. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas acknowledged Mexico’s increased border enforcement and outlined the challenges faced in states like Arizona.

Additionally, the administration has implemented measures such as the CBP One app to schedule migrant appointments at official border entry points, aiming to organize the process. A humanitarian parole program has also been introduced, allowing thousands from certain countries to enter the U.S., a move that has faced Republican backlash over concerns of circumventing immigration laws.

These developments illustrate the complex dynamics of U.S. border management and the political debates surrounding immigration policy.
