UK braced for extreme weather: Floods, snowstorms, and a 350-mile wide ‘snow bomb’
The UK is set to face a mix of severe weather conditions including heavy rain, flooding, and snowstorms, according to the Met Office and forecasters, with notable concerns about a 350-mile wide ‘snow bomb’ affecting Scotland and northern England.
The United Kingdom is forecasted to experience a mix of extreme weather conditions over the coming days, ranging from heavy rain and potential flooding to a possible snowstorm. The Met Office has warned of ongoing unsettled weather, with 33 flood warnings and 123 flood alerts issued across the country due to heavy rainfall. Despite no severe weather warnings being declared currently, conditions are expected to worsen with brisk winds and heavy rain anticipated in western regions.
On March 16, forecasters have highlighted concerns about a rare weather event that could introduce bitterly cold conditions and snow, especially in Scotland, due to a Sudden Stratospheric Warning (SSW) event. Northern Scotland may see temperatures drop to 0°C, while significant snowfall, intensifying up to 10cm per hour, is expected in areas such as Wick, Inverness, Fort William, and Portree by March 17. Furthermore, cities like Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham, and Cardiff are likely to experience heavy rainfall.
A specific concern is a 350-mile wide “snow bomb” expected next weekend, primarily affecting Scotland and parts of northern England. WXCharts predicts that this snow will come with low temperatures and be preceded and followed by rain, with the heaviest snowfall in areas including Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and Newcastle.
Meanwhile, a potential snowstorm predicted to stretch over 500 miles could impact the UK from Scotland to Birmingham by March 24, though the full extent of this snowfall remains uncertain due to a “chaotic atmosphere” over the Atlantic.
Despite these challenging forecasts, southern regions of the UK may experience milder temperatures, with highs potentially reaching as high as 10°C. As the weather continues to evolve, residents are advised to stay informed and prepare for a range of weather conditions, from snow and rain to possible milder spells in some parts of the country.
