UK presses Israel to allow more aid into famine-struck Gaza

In response to the severe famine crisis in Gaza, the UK’s Foreign Secretary calls for increased humanitarian access and more aid, as the region faces dire health and nutritional challenges.

In response to the escalating famine crisis in Gaza, UK’s Foreign Secretary, Lord David Cameron, has called on Israel to allow increased aid into the territory. The UK has contributed food parcels for 275,000 people, facilitated by the World Food Programme, in a bid to counteract the famine that threatens the region. With over 2,000 tonnes of aid already distributed, Lord Cameron emphasizes the need for sustained humanitarian access to address the urgent needs in Gaza, including healthcare, water, and sanitation improvements. He also advocates for Israel to open more crossings and enhance aid distribution capabilities within Gaza.

Amid these efforts, Gaza’s Kamal Adwan hospital is facing severe hardships, with staff resorting to eating animal feed, and an increasing number of pregnant women and children suffering due to malnutrition and lack of medical supplies. The hospital, running on limited resources, such as solar power for electricity, has witnessed numerous deaths from malnutrition and dehydration, including 27 children in recent weeks. Ahmed al-Kahlout, a senior nurse, has highlighted the dire conditions, underscoring the ICU’s reliance on solar power and the scarcity of essential supplies.

This unfolding humanitarian crisis has drawn international attention to the urgent need for aid in Gaza. Nearly 30% of children under two years old in northern Gaza suffer from acute malnutrition, according to Unicef. The United Nations has criticized Israel for restricting essential supply deliveries to Gaza, exacerbating the conditions necessary for survival. With the global community urging for a ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid to flow freely, efforts are underway to alleviate the suffering of Gaza’s civilians amidst this catastrophic situation.
