UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has proposed the revival of National Service, requiring all 18-year-olds to participate in either a paid military year or a weekend a month of unpaid community work. The plan, revealed during the general election campaign, aims to instill a “shared sense of purpose” and make society “more cohesive.”
However, this proposal has raised questions about its implementation and scope, particularly concerning the royal family. Senior minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan indicated that the young royals, including Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte, would be expected to participate unless a Royal Commission decides otherwise.
The policy has met with opposition from various quarters, including within the Conservative Party. Northern Ireland minister Steve Baker criticized the plan as “sprung” on candidates, and ex-military leaders like Lord West and General Richard Dannatt have questioned its feasibility and impact on defense spending. Labour and the Liberal Democrats have also dismissed the proposal as ill-conceived and politically motivated.
Sunak defended the initiative, emphasizing its potential to provide valuable skills and foster national unity. Nonetheless, the policy’s reception highlights the divisive nature of this bold proposal during a contentious election campaign.
