UK teachers voice concerns over AI in education

A survey reveals that two-thirds of UK teachers are sceptical about the reliability and accuracy of Artificial Intelligence tools like ChatGPT in educational settings, amidst government’s push for AI integration.

A recent report has highlighted growing concerns among UK teachers regarding the reliability and accuracy of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in educational settings. According to a survey of 1,012 educators, two-thirds of teachers are sceptical about employing AI tools, such as ChatGPT, for teaching purposes and assessing pupils’ work. This apprehension comes amidst Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s announcement of significant investments in AI technology for schools, aiming to integrate these tools into the classroom.

Despite the government’s push for AI integration in education, many teachers, including Geoff Barton from the Association of School and College Leaders, argue that the investment could be better allocated towards hiring more educators. Although a portion of teachers is experimenting with AI in their teaching methods, there is a noticeable concern regarding its potential to facilitate cheating among students and the necessity to revise grading systems to accommodate AI’s use.

Educators acknowledge the potential benefits of AI, such as reducing workload and enhancing students’ critical thinking skills. However, they emphasize the importance of precision and reliability in AI tools for a successful transition to AI-enhanced education. The Department for Education (DfE) has responded to these concerns by undertaking extensive research and launching initiatives like hackathons to explore the use of AI in improving educational outcomes while being mindful of the challenges.

As the education sector grapples with the integration of AI, the focus remains on balancing innovation with traditional teaching methods, ensuring that technological advancements support educators and enhance the learning experience for students.
