Royal portraits and duties: a look at Denmark and the UK’s queens

Queen Mary of Denmark prominently features in new official portraits post King Frederik X’s accession, while in the UK, Queen Camilla upholds her royal duties with a quiet determination, reflecting different styles of modern royalty.

Queen Mary of Denmark recently featured in her first official portraits alongside King Frederik X, following his accession to the throne. Taken by photographer Steen Evald, these portraits included Queen Mary adorned in a green velvet and lace gown by designer Birgit Hallstein. In these images, she wears the Danish Emerald Parure Tiara, a historic set composed of a necklace, earrings, and a brooch, originally gifted in 1840 by Christian VIII to Queen Caroline Amalie. This jewelry, known for its neoclassical design influenced by French crown jewels, includes both old and newly purchased emeralds and diamonds. The portraits have evoked mixed reactions on social media, with some praising the regal appearance and others critiquing the visibility of the necklace due to the gown’s lace neckline.

In the UK, Queen Camilla, wife of King Charles, has been actively fulfilling her royal duties, albeit with a more subdued presence compared to the late Queen Elizabeth II. Royal journalist Brittani Barger notes that Queen Camilla has been engaged in various royal commitments and supports causes such as The National Literacy Trust. Despite a lower media profile, Camilla is recognized for her dedication and personal engagement with the public, including responding to letters and sending signed items from when she was the Duchess of Cornwall. Her approach to her role is described as focused and reserved, continuing her duties without seeking the limelight.
