Julie Bishop appointed UN special envoy for Myanmar

Julie Bishop, former Australian Foreign Minister and chancellor of Australian National University, has been named the UN special envoy for Myanmar by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, marking a significant step towards addressing the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Myanmar.

Former Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has been named the UN special envoy for Myanmar, as announced by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. This appointment fills a 10-month vacancy following Noeleen Heyzer’s departure, amid worsening conflict in Myanmar since the military seized control in February 2021. The ongoing strife has significantly affected the nation, leading to large-scale violence and human rights concerns.

Bishop, also the chancellor of the Australian National University, brings a wealth of experience in political, legal, and leadership roles. Her appointment has been warmly received, with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and ANU Vice-Chancellor Prof Genevieve Bell notably endorsing her capabilities and highlighting the crucial timing amidst Myanmar’s escalating crisis.

Since the military takeover in Myanmar, the ensuing conflict has seen severe territorial battles and reports of indiscriminate bombings, significantly impacting civilians’ lives and rights. Bishop’s role involves working with ASEAN and international bodies to promote peace and coordinate efforts addressing the political, humanitarian, and security challenges facing Myanmar. The Australian government has emphasized the need for the Myanmar regime to cease violence, release detainees, enable humanitarian aid, and return to a path of inclusive democracy.
