UK introduces free counselling for jurors in traumatic trials

A new pilot programme providing free counselling sessions and a 24/7 helpline for jurors in traumatic trials has been launched across England and Wales, supported by Justice Minister Mike Freer.

The UK Government has introduced a pilot scheme to provide free counselling services to jurors involved in traumatic trials. This initiative was influenced by cases such as that of nurse Lucy Letby, who was convicted of murdering seven babies. Starting this summer, the scheme will be available in 15 Crown Courts across England and Wales, offering six free counselling sessions and a 24/7 telephone helpline. Justice Minister Mike Freer highlighted the programme’s role in supporting jurors, who are crucial to the justice system.

In Swansea, Brian Whitelock, 57, has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of 71-year-old Wendy Buckney but denies murder. The incident occurred in Clydach, near Swansea. Despite Whitelock’s plea of diminished responsibility, the prosecution has demanded a trial, scheduled for November 12. The case has drawn significant public interest, especially due to Buckney’s prominent role in the local equestrian community.

In Australia, former Jetstar pilot Greg Lynn’s trial for the alleged murder of campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay in Victoria’s Wonnangatta Valley took an unexpected turn when the jury was discharged by Justice Michael Croucher. The reasons were partially attributed to the complexities of the law. Defense barristers, Dermot Dann KC and Michael McGrath, represent Lynn. A new jury will be selected for the rescheduled trial, which is expected to last four to six weeks.
