Queen to step in for King Charles at Royal Maundy service amid his cancer treatment
Due to King Charles III’s ongoing cancer treatment, the Queen will represent him at the traditional Royal Maundy service at Worcester Cathedral, accompanied by Camilla. The event, marking significant community contributions with the distribution of Maundy money, underscores the royal commitment to public service.
The Queen will represent the King at the upcoming Royal Maundy service at Worcester Cathedral on March 28, 2024, due to his ongoing treatment for cancer. At this event, unique coins will be distributed to individuals who have made significant community contributions. The ceremony, where Camilla will also be present in place of Charles, is a hallmark in the royal calendar and signifies the royal family’s recognition of public service.
The Royal Maundy service, steeped in tradition dating back to a commandment by Christ, involves presenting recipients with two purses filled with Maundy money, symbolizing the monarch’s service to the people. The Bishop of Worcester, Dr John Inge, has expressed enthusiasm about hosting the Queen and highlighting the service of the ceremony’s recipients.
While the King continues to manage official duties behind the scenes, his participation in public events, including potentially the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, may be affected due to his health condition. However, his engagement in responsibilities such as the weekly audience with the Prime Minister demonstrates his ongoing dedication to his duties.
The involvement of Camilla and possibly other members of the royal family in this year’s Royal Maundy service continues the tradition of royal participation in this ceremony, which last year took place at York Minster with Camilla accompanying the King.
